Jornadas de intenso ruedo de manadas de vicuñas silvestres, es encomendada al conjunto de familias de comunidades del extremo sud de Bolivia, para la esquila del altamente valorado pelo de vicuña.
Una vez al año, con un permiso especial de las dependencias del Estado Boliviano se procede al acopio de pelo de vicuña y que es vendido a confeccionistas nacionales e internacionales que elaboran prendas de vestir de alta moda y que están presentes en las capitales principales de Europa y Estados Unidos.
Una de los derivados de la vicuña es su pelaje que se transforma en una de las fibras más caras del mundo, tiene un grosor de 10,8 a 11,4 micras (milésimas de milímetro), bastante más delgada que la cachemira, procedente de una cabra asiática, que tiene en promedio 16 micras con precios entre 450 y 650 dólares por kilogramo aproximadamente.
En Bolivia, se encuentran principalmente en la Reserva Eduardo Avaroa del Altiplano Sud del Departamento de Potosí y en el Area natural de Manejo Integrado Nacional Apolobamba (Ulla Ulla) en el Departamento de La Paz, para ello se cuenta con una ley de protección que no permite la caza y se han iniciado programas y proyectos de cria de vicuñas en cautiverio con interesantes resultados para la economía campesina.
Aproximadamente existen 150 mil vicuñas en Bolivia, y se considera a la especie libre del riesgo de extinción si se mantienen las actuales condiciones de protección, que han permitido que su población crezca ocho por ciento anual.Los programas de conservación aplicados en los últimos años permitieron, con ayuda de los campesinos de las regiones donde habitan, aumentar el número de vicuñas y repoblar las llanuras andinas.
